Water Systems

Water Catchment

Water Catchment:

The Eco Living Dome provides a clean, reliable, easy to install and inexpensive water catchment system. Rain water runs off the dome into a copper trough around the perimeter of the dome. It passes through a charcoal sand filter, which removes particulates and organic matter, and is stored in a cistern.

Water Filtration

Water Filtration:

Water is passed through small mesh screens to remove particulate. A sand filter used to remove smaller organic matter and a charcoal filter to make the water potable. A distillation system for creating potable water within the dome is an option. Lugol's iodine, ultra-violet light or other oxidizing agents can be used for prevention of biological contamination.

Water Storage

Water Storage:

Depending on the frequency of rain and your family needs, you can choose between a sophisticated or a simple storage system. A sophisticated system would utilize 3 cisterns with increasingly finer filters as the water flows through. The main cistern would be for garden water, a smaller cistern for shower and kitchen water, and a third cistern for potable water which will pass through a carbon filter. A simple system would utilize a single tank, with the water being filtered for drinking while it is being pumped into the kitchen. Tanks rarely freeze due to their thermal mass and run-off tanks can be added.

Water Pump

Water Pumping:

Two types of pumps are available, hand pumps and 12 Volt battery powered pumps. Utilizing hand pumps, water is available without power. We offer a household and a garden hand pump that can pull water up to 23 feet. Our battery pumps can be powered by a solar, wind or bio-energy system.

Water Heaters

Water Heating:

Your Eco Living Dome will have the comforts of a hot bath, shower and dishwater! We offer Passive Solar Heat tubes with a hot water Storage Tank all in One Unit. This system is considered "passive" because it has no moving parts and operates with local water pressure and solar radiation. Our Solar Heat Tubes (left photo) provide both floor heating and domestic hot water. The glass vacuum tubes absorb the sun’s infrared radiation and transfers it to the water, which is then passed through the floor first, and then into your hot water heater. The same water that fills your hot bath or kitchen sink has already warmed your dome. This is a very efficient system because one heat source is doing all the work. It is simple, has great longevity and is easy to install and maintain. You can have a 20-gallon size, appropriate for a 1-2 person household or a 50-gallon model suitable for a household of 4-5.

Water Coils can also be added to your wood burning stove and then plumbed into your hot water heater for domestic use.

Water Treatment

Water Treatment:

Greywater is the wastewater generated from laundry, dishwashing, and bathing, which will be processed in ponds and drain fields, where plants and mushrooms will consume the organic and chemical pollutants, creating clean water for your landscape and garden.

Greywater differs from water from the toilets which is designated sewage or blackwater to indicate it contains human waste.

Black-water: Eco Living Domes composting toilets will transform your black water and humanure into compost for berries and fruit trees. This wonderful system is not to be confused with Black-water, the secret organization, that is known for being full of sh...
